Cyberverbrechen im Jahr 2030

Basierend auf dem Manga von Masamune Shirow handelt die Animeserie Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - ebenso wie Mamoru Oshiis Animefilm von 1995 - von der Arbeit der Spezialeinheit Section 9, die sich im Jahr 2030 um Cyberverbrechen jeglicher Art kümmert. Die Fälle von Majo Makoto Kusanagi und ihrem Team können dabei in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt werden: Episoden mit der Kennzeichnung Stand Alone sind in sich abgeschlossene Fälle, während Complex-Folgen eine fortlaufende Geschichte erzählen.

Auf die erste Staffel aus dem Jahr 2002 folgte 2004 eine zweite Staffel namens „Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG“. Beide Seasons wurden auch in spielfilmlangen OVAs zusammengefasst. Ein Fernsehfilm namens „Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society“ führte die Serie 2006 fort.
